California or Bust, Day 3 | IL to IA
I love truck stops. My Grampy drove truck for years. I’ve visited this particular one in the past, when I was doing my own traveling, and I would wander the aisles, looking at everything I possibly could. And trust me, there was A LOT to look at here. We didn’t all pile in on this trip, since we got a late start (breakfast with another friend was totally worth it), but it warranted a stop to snap a few photos.
Thanks again to that nifty little Roadtrippers app, we found the Devonian Fossil Gorge, in Iowa City. It was a perfect place to get out and stretch our legs while walking along what is a 375 million year old ocean floor. The geekery is strong in my children, especially Elijah, and I’m willing to bet that they could’ve spent hours examining every single rock and fossil that the place had. Wyatt…he’s not so much a walker (yet), so he was content to lounge in the warm sunshine.
He was convinced that that little plant was going to grow into a beanstalk, so people could visit the giants and have lunch.
Ducks!
We even met a cool dog with heterochromia (two different colored eyes).
After a sufficient amount of stretching, it was more travel time. Iowa has a lot of farms, and fences, and roads with farms…you get the idea.
